Ace Maryland Gun Laws & Firearms Safety 2026 – Lock, Load and Learn!

The correct answer is that Maryland uses both the Federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and a state-based background check system for firearm purchases from licensed dealers. This dual system ensures comprehensive screening for individuals seeking to purchase firearms.

By employing the federal NICS, which checks the potential buyer's eligibility against federal databases, Maryland supplements this with its own state-specific background check requirements. This approach enhances the overall effectiveness of identifying individuals who may be prohibited from purchasing firearms due to various factors, such as criminal history or mental health issues.

The incorporation of both systems reflects Maryland's commitment to gun safety and regulation, aiming to minimize the risks associated with firearm ownership. This method provides a more thorough vetting process before a firearm sale is completed.
